Mercedes Schlapp doesn't have an easy gig as the White House strategic communications adviser. It's not an easy task for Mercedes Schlapp as the strategic communication adviser at White House. But through it all Schlapp has stayed determined to focus on her task in hand and has worked closely with White House's policy as well as legislative affairs and policy shops as in the larger communication operation for policy-related rollouts. In the beginning, she is focusing on safety at school problems, addiction, infrastructure and international trade. She has not had much contact with the media as part of the job she has. The media attention she received in March came when she came up as one of the candidates to succeed Hope Hicks. Mercedes Schlapp does not have a straightforward job as White House strategic communication adviser. She has to deal with a president that acts as his own communication director and a myriad of legal disputes that can throw off the administration's messaging strategy and a number of Cabinet secretaries who are caught in their own controversies. Schlapp has been keeping an eye at the end of the tunnel, working on policy implementation with White House staff from the Political and Legislative Affairs team and the policy shop, and broader communications. Her focus to date has been issues such as school safety as well as the opioid epidemic trade, infrastructure as well as other topics. Her current work doesn't have many interactions with reporters. It was in March that she was the subject of a sudden surge in attention, when it became it was reported that she would be an option to fill Hope Hicks's position as director of communication.
